4/27/11 – 5/15/11 San Diego REPertory Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, and Vantage Theatre, in Association with Arena Stage, present the Second Stage Theatre’s Production of “Let Me Down Easy,” conceived, written and performed by award-winning playwright and actress, Anna Deavere Smith.
“Let Me Down Easy” explores the power of the body, the price of health and the resilience of the spirit. Based on interviews with an eclectic range of people — from a heavyweight boxer to a supermodel, and from Texas Governor Ann Richards to legendary cyclist Lance Armstrong.
To write “Let Me Down Easy,” Smith interviewed over 300 people on three continents. “My goal is to learn as much about a person as possible by studying the way they speak,” says Smith. “My portrayals of the more than 20 people in this one-woman show are all drawn from the words of people who speak to the vulnerability of the human body, the resilience of the spirit, the price of care.”
Smith speaks directly to our hopes and discomforts about life, death, whom we should take care of and who should (or should not) take care of us. This show is a bracing, poetic experience you won’t want to miss.
Production will run from April 27, 2011 to May 15, 2011 at Lyceum Stage
