Old Globe Theatre in San Diego

When the skies are looking a bit leaky over San Diego, there are few better places to seek shelter than the Old Globe Theatre, one of America’s foremost theatre companies.

Actually, the Old Globe is just as inviting on one of our city’s standard postcard-perfect days, too. (And it’s worth noting that this winter, dry and sunny weather has been the absolute norm.) It’s a longtime mainstay of San Diego’s cultural scene—and a tribute to the city’s full-hearted embrace of the arts.

One of the centerpieces of beautiful Balboa Park, the Old Globe is just a couple of miles from the Sofia Hotel—a quick drive or bus ride away.

The Old Globe Theatre: A San Diego Institution

The Old Globe has been treating audiences to spectacular performances since 1935, when it was constructed as a temporary venue for condensed Shakespeare productions during the California Pacific International Exposition. The facility became a permanent fixture of Balboa Park after the exposition concluded through a partnership between the San Diego Community Theatre and the City of San Diego.

Today a theatre-in-the-round and an outdoor theatre complement the Old Globe proper, offering plenty of stage space for works spanning eras, styles, and genres. The caliber of talent represented in the performances is significant: From Hairspray to Henry IV, Old Globe productions have earned numerous Tony Awards and scores of nominations across the decades.

Better than 300,000 audience members a year enjoy the company’s plays and musicals—and you should be one of them!

Enjoying Great Theatre in Style at the Sofia

Whether you’re in the mood for one of the Bard’s masterpieces or a cutting-edge contemporary work, you’ll be experiencing high entertainment in one of the country’s top regional theatres.
