Moon Over San Diego

Do you believe that the spirits of the dead roam freely—or are you a longtime skeptic of paranormal phenomena?

Either way, we’ve got the perfect Halloween-time activity for you in San Diego’s most historic neighborhoods!

On October 31, the San Diego Ghost Hunters will lead one of their famed nighttime investigations of the William Heath Davis House, one of the oldest buildings in San Diego and the home of the Gaslamp Museum. Brave enough to come along?

The Historic—and Haunted—Gaslamp

William Heath Davis, a Hawaii-born businessman, is considered the father of New Town San Diego, which he helped plot out in about 1850 as a more strategically located counterpart to Old Town, and which ultimately became the modern city’s downtown. The historic Gaslamp Quarter, once San Diego’s most infamous red-light district and now a hugely popular tourist destination, is one of the best places to get a sense of those formative days.

The William Heath Davis House wasn’t actually ever Davis’s residence, but it does date from the early years of New Town. The structure was actually moved to San Diego from Maine, just one of the colorful events it’s lived through. It served at one point as a county hospital, among many other incarnations. The Biography Channel featured the house’s legacy of eerie happenings on a 2012 episode of its program My Ghost Story.
