San Diego Is A Golf Paradise All Year Long

If you’re a golfer, you really need to tee up in San Diego. And if you’re already a convert to our numerous world-class courses, why not book yourself a room at the Sofia for another round or two?

No question about it: Our fair city is one of the great golf destinations on the planet. (And not just because we’re Phil Mickelson’s hometown.) Why, pray tell? Well, for starters, how about our spectacular climate—balmy and sun-kissed enough to support year-round play? And how about the amazing variety of our landscapes, which range from oceanfront beaches and bluffs to desert basins? Last but certainly not least, consider the fact that San Diego County sports nearly 100 top-quality courses!

Among them is Torrey Pines, that half-century-old legend of a golf course that, since the 1960s, has annually hosted the Farmers Insurance Open. In 2008, this spectacular La Jolla spread hosted the U.S. Open (when Tiger Woods fended off Rocco Mediate); it’s slated to do so again come 2021.

The variety of conditions and scenery on hand in our dozens and dozens of courses make greater San Diego an endlessly dynamic place to hit the fairway— from the sea breeze of Torrey Pines and Aviara (designed by Arnold Palmer) to the desert winds of Maderas and Steele Canyon. The oldest course is Goat Hill, established more than six decades ago.

And with our comfortable temperatures and scarce rainfall, you can count on inviting golfing weather—some of the best anywhere—all over the calendar in San Diego.

For an overview of the region’s courses, check out the San Diego Golf Guide. And remember to iron down accommodations at the Sofia Hotel for a wonderfully convenient (and tastefully elegant) setup right in downtown San Diego: We’d be proud to serve as your home base on a golf getaway in America’s Finest City!
