Here’s wishing the whole Check In San Diego family a very happy 4th of July from all of us here at the Sofia Hotel!
If you find yourself (and we hope you do) marking the nation’s birthday with us at the Sofia—one of the cream-of-the-crop San Diego hotels—here are just a few of your options in the celebration department.
The Big Bay Boom
If you’ve never had the privilege of enjoying the Big Bay Boom in the flesh, you’re missing out! This fireworks extravaganza—said to be the biggest on the West Coast—draws as many as 500,000 people with its fabulous waterfront pyrotechnics backed by music.
Getting underway at 9 PM on the 4th, the Big Bay Boom fireworks blast from a quartet of barges stationed around San Diego Bay, with prime viewing from Seaport Village or the North and South Embarcadero just blocks from our hotel, not to mention other bayside vantages such as Shelter Island and Harbor Island.
Coronado Island Fireworks
Another flurry of fireworks will go off at 9 PM over Glorietta Bay on Coronado, the climax to a day’s worth of patriotic pride that’ll also include an Orange Avenue parade at 10 AM and a Spreckels Park concert at 4 PM.
San Diego County Fair Fireworks
We recently spotlighted the San Diego County Fair here at the blog, and the 4th of July marks its final bash. At 9 PM, the Del Mar racetrack will glitter and flash with the Fair’s very own top-shelf display of Independence Day fireworks!
Old Town San Diego’s 4th of July Shindig
Once again Old Town San Diego will be turning back the clock for its popular (and free) July 4th celebration, which runs from 11 AM to 4 PM.
Held at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, it’ll be an old-fashioned party of the sort 19th-century San Diegans would be used to: musicians (including a brass band to start the day’s festivities), wagon rides, arts-and-crafts, and a whole mess of period games, from cow-chip tossing and cherry-pit spitting to the culminating pie-eating competition.
Celebrate Independence Day at the Sofia
We hope you’ll join us here at one of the most beloved and historic of San Diego hotels, the Sofia, for 2017’s 4th of July holiday. Finally, if you can’t make it for our world-class Independence Day bash, be sure to come visit sometime this summer and soak up all that America’s Greatest City has to offer!
